Tour of Britain Tuesday 3rd September
As you will be aware the above event is happening in and around Kelso on Tuesday. As a school we have been provided with a space along Angraflat Road to watch the riders leave Kelso at the start of the race. A number of our teachers will be taking their class out to watch.
Celebration of Learning Senior Awards Evening
We are hosting our Celebration of Learning Evening for learners from last session’s S4-S6 on Monday 9th September. This event will honour their achievements and successes, with awards for both academic attainment and values in action.
To accommodate more awards and allow more family and friends to attend, the event this year will take place at Tait Hall.
Mobile Phone Guidance at KHS
Based on the recent guidance from the Scottish Government regarding the use of mobile phones in schools, our Extended Leadership Team has reviewed the KHS policy on mobile phones. At KHS, students are permitted to bring their mobile phones to school and may use them during morning break and lunchtime in designated areas such as the canteen and outside. However, during class time and when moving between classes, all mobile phones must be switched off or set to silent mode and kept out of sight. Our school policy outlines the steps that will be taken if a student uses their mobile phone outside of the designated times.
Scottish Beekeepers Magazine Centenary Edition
We are a very proud school! Congratulations to Kiera Cleland, Ella Grainger, Nathan Kelly and Lena Kielo – some of our talented S3 Graphic Communication learners – and to Ellison Falconer in S2. In June they entered a competition run by Scottish Beekeepers, where they were tasked with designing a front cover for the centenary edition of the Scottish Beekeepers magazine. Judging took place at The Royal Highland Show and their designs made it into the brochure. Well done to you all on this magnificent achievement and a huge thank you to Mrs Poole for supporting our S3 Graphic Communication learners. #pridekhs

And Our Exciting Bee News Continues
And we have more exciting Bee news! At the end of last term, our fantastic Advanced Higher Biology students – Jessica Robertson, Sara Marriott, Bronwen Payne and Lucy Campbell – joined learners from three other high schools on a collaborative investigation to better understand the presence of microplastics in Honey Bee colonies.
Jessica, Sara, Bronwen and Lucy sampled five different colonies in Scotland to look for microplastics. The first study of this kind was carried out in 2021, by a team of EU scientists who sampled eighteen Danish colonies and found thirteen different types of plastic and categorised these based upon their appearance. Using a similar method, Jessica, Sara, Bronwen and Lucy categorised fibres found in the debris into the same groups as used in the EU study. The donut chart photos show the results of their work. Just like the EU study, students found fibres present in all of the colonies sampled. The EU team found that fragments and fibres accounted for 90 % of the finds. In our school study, we found that fragments and fibres represented 78 % of finds. Although schools do not have access to expensive diagnostic testing as used in the EU study, it seems likely that most of the Scottish finds will have been mixture of polyester, polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride and polyurethane.
Jessica, Sara, Bronwen and Lucy have now been asked to write an article for an international magazine reporting their investigations and findings. Well done! #pridekhs

KHS World Map
Our World Map was re-painted at the end of last term. Many thanks to Mr Dalziel for the photograph and to The Royal Scottish Geographical Society (RSGS) for their partnership working and support. #pridekhs

KHS Athletics Finals Results
Please see our Athletics Finals results from the end of term. Our thanks to all competitors who made the day such a great event and to staff for their support.

Social Subject Superstars
This week’s theme for our Social Subjects Superstars is Excellence. Well done to all featured this week! #pridekhs

Well-done, Corey!
A huge well done to Corey Fawdry in S5 on his amazing theatrical achievements. For three weeks over the summer holidays, Corey attended a theatrical workshop at The Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh which culminated in two performances of ‘The Thirty-Nine Steps’ based on the novel by John Buchan. Corey starred as solo singer and as a Businessman in the Train scene. Corey hopes to attend further drama courses at the Lyceum. We wish him well and hope to see him again soon on the stage. Congratulations from all at KHS! #pridekhs

Xpressions App
All parents/carers are encouraged to download the Xpressions app on their phone. This is a really quick, easy way to message the school and for us to send messages to you.
We are aware that some S1 parents have had issues with their child not showing on the app – a workaround that seems to resolve this issue is to log out and log back in to the app. That seems to then show the correct data.
Hot Off the Press!
Hot off the press ! Some new job opportunities within the Scottish Borders.

KHS Parent Council
We are hosting our first meeting of the session on Thursday 5th September at 7pm, at Kelso High School. These meetings are open to all parents and carers and provide a great opportunity to stay informed about important events, documents, and discussions.
We encourage you to join us to help discuss and set the agenda for the upcoming year. We’d love to hear what information you would find helpful or any issues you would like to address.
Last year, we had presentations followed by a Q&A session with Mrs. Dyer, Faculty Principal Teacher for Support for Learning, and Julie Pollock, Skills Development Scotland Advisor.
