Hockey is gearing up for the new season with a new coaching team. Volunteer coach David Ferguson is our Director of Hockey, and he works closely with our Head of PE, HE and Sport Mr Brown, and new hockey coach, science teacher Miss Brown, to ensure all children of all ages and abilities will have the opportunity to be part of the hockey programme.
We are working closely with Scottish Borders Council and sports organisations to ensure the full programme of sport can return safely as we seek to ensure there are no Covid-19 outbreaks. We believe that school sport is a valuable part of our children’s education, as it contributes to their physical and mental health and wellbeing, enables them to develop friendships, new skills and confidence, and grow as people, so we were delighted to resume training in the first week back. But it’s never too late to start, so anyone new to hockey can still sign up.
Mondays – S2 and S3
Tuesdays – S1
Wednesdays – S4, S5 and S6
Borders schools are working together to ensure that we can operate bus trips to games and accommodate multiple teams at the same time, both in changing rooms and around the pitches, in line with regulations. As we finalise arrangements, we have agreed with all Borders schools that – providing there are no Covid regulation changes – we will resume all matches when our students return from the October break. We have a full fixture list planned for all year groups, against schools in the Borders and Edinburgh, and Mr Ferguson and Mr Brown are currently working with other schools to arrange these.
We would like to thank all the parents who have stepped up to volunteer time and support, as hockey would not be possible without your help. We are still looking for team managers for S1s and S3s, to attend games on Friday afternoons and/or Saturday mornings, and help with overseeing pupil safety (you do not need to know anything about hockey!). Please contact David Ferguson (email@example.com) if able to help.
Ashley Prentice has taken on the role of Chairperson of the Kelso HS Hockey Committee, which supports the coaches and managers, and organises fundraising events to help us cover the costs of buses and equipment. For example, one bus costs around £350 per game – and we plan 15-20 fixtures – and a junior goalkeeper kit now costs around £700 in full. Kelso High School and our excellent Parent Council support the hockey financially, but we ask for a £35 fee per player to be paid through ParentPay by end of September to help us to book bus travel for the full season. If anyone requires longer to pay, David Ferguson can arrange that.
The committee also helps parents to get to know each other and enjoy sport’s social side so any parent who would like to join our committee is very welcome, and ideas for fundraisers and events are also gratefully received. Please contact Ashley: firstname.lastname@example.org.
Full information on high school hockey, with contact details and the mandatory consent form, are now available on the KHS website here. The consent form, with emergency contacts, has to be completed by parents of ALL CHILDREN, S1 to S6, and returned to David (email@example.com) before your child can play.
The S1 squad will wear red tops this season and you can now order these by emailing David, stating the size you require (XS, S, M or L). They will be priced £25 each to be paid to Kelso HS via ParentPay. The rest of the kit, including navy skorts or shorts, and red socks, red hoody, and navy rain jacket are now available from Border Embroideries here. David can provide information on sizing.
