Weekly Update 23/04/2021

Welcome Back

It was lovely to welcome back all our young people into our school building on Monday Things have not been easy for anyone over this past year however our young people have managed to wear their face coverings all day, which is not easy for anyone.  We are very proud as they demonstrate our values #PRIDE

During this summer term, we will be supporting our young people within the Senior Phase to complete the necessary assessments to gather appropriate evidence as outlined with the SQA Alternative Certification Model guidelines.

A reminder that next week, Friday 30th April is an INSET day and also Monday 3rd May is a public holiday so school is closed that day.

COVID Test Kits

S1 – S3 pupils were given consent forms to do COVID tests at home this week. These need to be signed by parents and returned to the school office before being issued with the test kits. If you haven’t yet completed one for your young person, they can still hand this in to the office at any time next week and get their test kit.

Drop in sessions are being offered to complete Borders College Application for next year

Session 1 – Room 2017 – Monday 26th April – 2:15pm -3:35pm

Session 2 – Room 2017 – Wednesday 28th April – 9am-10:30am

Seniors please choose a session that does not clash with the assessment arrangements

Immunisations

HPV (Human Papiloma Virus) Immunisations
The date for HPV Immunisations is Tuesday 25th and Wednesday 26th May 2021 and involves all S1 and S2 and girls in S3. All S1 pupils will receive a HPV consent form this week.
All pupils who have already received a 1st HPV immunisation will automatically be recalled for the next one, as 2 are required to be fully immunised.  Parents completed this consent form in previous years which covers both 1st and 2nd immunisations.  S2 pupils who have not returned a completed form last year will be given a new one this year. Consent forms will be distributed out to pupils in Registration.

S3 Immunisations
These will be taking place on Tuesday 15th June 2021.

Consent Forms
Please return completed immunisation forms to the school office ASAP to ensure being given immunisations.

Also we cannot take consent over the telephone on the day from parents, as the session becomes very busy and we have to prioritise those who are receiving the vaccine.

Could you please ensure your child wears short sleeved shirts or vests under their shirt to ensure ease of immunisation and that pupils have something to eat prior to immunisations.

School Hockey

We are looking to restart hockey for all ages, girls and boys, after school on Mondays and Tuesdays from next week (26 April) and through the summer term. We will start with fun sessions for everyone – you don’t have to have played any hockey before – but due to Covid-19 guidance we now need everyone to sign up beforehand via the Kelso HS Hockey Facebook page.

We plan to have S1s & S2s on Mondays, and S3s-S6s on Tuesdays – both 4pm-5.15pm – but this may change depending on numbers and current restrictions. We know that many S4-S6s may be unavailable due to assessment work and other plans, but everyone is free to come when it suits them – provided you sign up. We aim to finish the summer term with fun tournaments for all, provided Covid-19 restrictions allow.

S1 students will require parents or carers to sign them up as S1 children are not permitted to join Facebook page.

All Kelso HS and Scottish Hockey Covid-19 protocols will be followed with all sessions supervised by David Ferguson.

For more information, email David Ferguson – davidferg@btinternet.com.

School Rugby – S1/S2

We will start with fun sessions for everyone – you don’t have to have played any Rugby before.  All Kelso HS and Scottish Rugby Covid-19 protocols will be followed.  All activities will be touch or tag Rugby based.

Anyone interested should bring kit, boots and water.

Great results for the first NSEA show for more than a year! It was a very long day but the good results make it worthwhile!

Have your say on the Council’s draft Anti-Poverty Strategy

The Council is currently holding two consultations on the draft Anti-Poverty Strategy which has been developed as part a Borders-wide commitment to supporting individuals, families and communities experiencing hardship, whether that is as a result of economic, fuel, housing, food, digital or any other type of difficult circumstance. Closing date for both consultations is 16 May.

  • The first consultation is looking for views on the draft strategy itself as well as what respondents see as the main challenges and opportunities that these issues can present. There is also scope to provide information about what initiatives and ideas are already proving beneficial and also to make suggestions on what else could be done to reduce poverty. Find out more at: www.scotborders.gov.uk/antipovertystrategyconsultation
  • The second one is looking for more in-depth feedback from individuals and communities with direct experience of the challenges of living on a limited income and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Views are sought on a range of issues including health and wellbeing, income, work and employment, access to family and community, digital connectivity and access to travel and transport. Find out more at: www.scotborders.gov.uk/antipovertystrategyfeedback

The consultations are also available in alternative formats and languages. One-to-one conversations can be arranged. For more information, email: communityengagement@scotborders.gov.uk
