S1 Parents/Carers

Thank you to those parent/carers who were able to join our Information Session on Wednesday evening.  We have adapted our Website to includes a ‘Parent/Carer Information’ tab and a new S1 Folder where the presentations from our evening are located.  During the evening we sought feedback and so will share this next week along with completed actions from this very useful feedback.

S1 Biometric System for purchasing food within our canteen

Within KHS, we have the option for our young people to use an image of their finger print, which is then turned into a digital signature, to allow them to purchase food within our canteen.  This has been very popular with our other young people as it reduces the time within the queues and there is no need to remember a pin number.  Please find attached more information and an electronic copy of the ‘opt-in’ form that will be shared with our S1 next week.

S1-S6 Reports

Over this next term, we will be sharing our Interim Reports for each year group.  These will include key statements on progress on learning along with being ready to learn – ie arrives on time, bringing appropriate equipment, settling quickly to tasks, mobile phones are out of sight and being respectful towards others.

S2 reports will be shared with home and young people on Friday 3rd November.

Quiz Night

Our S6 Achievements and Legacy Committee are organising a quiz night. All the money will be going towards their S6 Yearbooks. Please come along on the evening – tickets are available from the School Office and Browns Newsagents.

Buddy Social

On Thursday 26th October, we will be holding the S1 and S6 Buddy Social here in the assembly hall from 6.30-9pm. Tickets are £5 and can be paid via ParentPay now.

Well done to our S2.4 Artists

Well done to our 2.4 Art & Design class who have recently completed a Jewellery Design unit. They responded to a design brief and specification asking them to design and make a piece of jewellery which was influenced by the style of bangle designer Peter Chang and inspired by the shapes, colours and patterns from insects. Having analysed relevant market research, learners isolated shapes, colours and patterns from their source of inspiration image and used them to design their own ideas. They then chose their favourite design to create in 3D modelling and came up with some wonderfully unique results. We are sure you will agree they look really impressive. Many thanks to Mrs Wood for the fabulous photos! #pridekhs

Well done Archie!

Wow! Well done, Archie. We are always delighted to hear about the out of school successes and wider achievements of our young people. Huge congratulations to Archie Green in S3 who has been appointed as a Junior Ambassador for the Southern Upland Moor Group (SUMG). Archie’s role involves highlighting the work of SUMG and helping to educate the public on rural life and his experiences of rural life as a young person. We look forward to hearing about what else Archie gets up to in his exciting new role. Please enjoy some photos of Archie on SUMG duty at the Border Union Show. #pridekhs

Pumpkin Pride

Pumpkin Pride! Well done to Sinead in S2 who has had the most amazing success growing pumpkins in our school garden. What a tremendous looking pumpkin – and yes, it really is as big as it looks. #pridekhs

We are a very proud school

We are a very proud school! Thursday and Friday – the 28th and 29th of September – saw a group of senior learners complete the final expedition for their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award. Day One involved setting off from Shedden Park, Kelso, with the two groups having to negotiate a planned route to Town Yetholm campsite via Sprouston, Lempitlaw and Hoselaw before crossing Widopen and the final leg to Town Yetholm. Tents were pitched whilst water boiled for dinner. Limited daylight forced everyone under cover early and then the rain set in for the night. Day Two saw an early start with breakfast cooked and tents dismantled before they embarked on a route which took them up the Bowmont Valley, crossing the hills to Hownam Grange and then taking the road down the Kale Valley to the finish at Morebattle. On the way both groups visited Hoselaw Chapel and had various interactions with inquisitive cattle. We are delighted to share the news that they all passed! Well done to all involved and a huge thank you to Mr Dalziel for his tremendous support! #pridekhs

Information about the Trust and the purpose of it is detailed below:-

The Thomas Maconochie KHS Trust was established in 2003 by Mr Thomas Maconochie, a former pupil of the school.  The trust is a recognised Charity, Scottish Charity No: SCO34775.

  • ongoing running costs for extra-curricular activities, e.g. sport, music and drama
  • extra activities offered in school for classes, groups or year groups, e.g. conferences, education for work initiatives, visits
  • individual pupil participation in courses and activities, e.g. Gap Year

All groups / individuals who have received funding at a previous meeting should submit a report (with photographs if possible) indicating how the money was spent and the experience gained from taking part in the activity.
