Weekly Update 17/06/2022

S6 Parent Information Session

It was lovely to welcome our young people in S6 along with their parent/carers to our Parent Info Evening on Tuesday.  This was an opportunity to share key information about the year ahead as well the most up to date information on further and higher education.

We have added the presentation from the evening below.

Kelsae Laddie 2022 Visit

Yesterday afternoon we have the pleasure of welcoming Kelsae Laddie for 2022 into Kelso High School.  We gathered our S2s together to allow our winner and runner-up of to share their poem from the annual competition followed by a small presentation.

We wish the Kelsae Laddie all the best for the year ahead.

Hockey Awards Ceremony

We were delighted to hold our awards ceremony for young people and families last night.  This was an opportunity to recognise the fantastic effort in hockey for all our young people from S1 to S6 – girls and boys- right through the year.  It was also about recognising the support we receive from parents/carers, grandparents and friends.  Finally we were able to officially thank David Fergusson, our Director of Hockey, who continues to go above and beyond to bring hockey back after Covid.

S5 Volunteering

Well done to Tegan and Ruby in S5 who visited Queen’s House this morning to introduce themselves to staff as part of their S5 Volunteering Programme. Ruby and Tegan hope to visit Queen’s House three times a week from August to May to work with staff to support residents. #pridekhs

Welcome Back to KHS

It is always an absolute pleasure to welcome back former pupils, so this week we were delighted to have two former students, Harry Graves and Skye Chatburn visit our Higher and N5 Graphic Communication class. Both students have chosen careers in Architecture having studied at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen. Skye explained projects she was involved in for her three year course and Harry expanded on his work for his Masters, having recently completed six years of studies. We were very impressed with their work and their pathway from school through university and now into work with Aitken and Turnbull Architects in Galashiels. We wish them well in achieving the their full qualification in due course. If anyone is interested in work experience with Aitken and Turnbull Architects please see Mr Martin at KHS. Thank you to Skye and Harry! #pridekhs

Well done to Honey-Rose, Erin, Pola and Summer!

We are always very proud of our young people, but when they do things to help others, that makes us even prouder! Yesterday – Thursday 16th June – saw S4 pupils, Honey-Rose, Summer, Erin and Pola accompanied by a very proud Mrs Fisher, travel up to Edinburgh for the Social Enterprise Academy Scotland Start Up Awards Ceremony held in the Assembly Rooms on George Street. In S3, Honey-Rose, Pola, Summer and Erin as part of their S3 Business and IT class had participated in Social Enterprise Academy – a Scottish-based programme that empowers young people to set up ‘socially conscious’ businesses.

Yesterday, our socially conscious entrepreneurs manned a stall where they showcased all their fabulous work and learning.  Delegates from all over the United Kingdom were keen to learn more about the work that had been undertaken and the skills that our learners had developed on their journey. Shirley-Anne Sommerville – the current Cabinet Secretary for Education and Skills in the Scottish Government – popped in to say hello and congratulate Pola, Erin, Honey-Rose and Summer on their achievements. Please enjoy some photos from yesterday’s event. A huge thank you to Mrs Fisher – our fantastic KHS Business Studies teacher – who as always has gone over and above to support our learners and help them to help others! #pridekhs

Kelso U-17’s Football

Kelso travelled to Dalkeith on Sunday for the final of the Seryfa Div II Victor Paris League Cup against Dalkeith Thistle Cardo. Strangely already having home advantage in a cup final Dalkeith won the toss and took the advantage of a slight hill and a strong wind in the first half. After a cagey first 15 mins. Kelso began to take control of the game and were unlucky not to score following a clearance off the line after a goalmouth scramble. On 39 mins. good work by Sam Wood resulted in the opening goal. Closing the defender down he won the ball before going on to shoot low past the goalkeeper from just inside the box to make it 1-0.

The second half started with Kelso on the front foot again. Great work by Kieran Burns on 48 mins. saw him rob the defender feeding Liam Longstaff who beat his man on the right wing before driving to the bi-line and cutting back to Kieran who had continued his run and coolly slotted a low shot past the goalkeeper into the right hand corner to make it 2-0. With the wind continuing to make conditions difficult Kelso looked the likelier to score but a good save from Ewan Graham on rare Dalkeith attack kept the score at 2-0. Only a good save from the Dalkeith goalkeeper from a Sam Wood hooked shot and Kieran Burns hitting the inside of the post after a great shot from the edge of the box kept the score at 2-0 and Kelso comfortably saw out the game to win the Cup!

With availability issues due to football and rugby match day clashes this was probably the teams’ final game. As the first Kelso youth team to play in the Edinburgh leagues, they achieved an unbeaten league championship and cup double in their first year. That saw them promoted to Div II where a narrow defeat in the Div II league cup final followed. They also reached the last 32 of the Scottish Cup (over 400 teams start out) and were sitting comfortably in second place in the league with promotion to Div I looking likely before Covid struck.  Two Div II league cup finals last season saw victory over Gala in one and a narrow defeat in the other. This season saw a third place finish in the Div II league despite injuries and availability problems before finishing off with Sunday’s cup final win. They really have raised the profile of Kelso youth football over these years.
