Oh what a night!
Yesterday evening saw one of the absolute highlights of the KHS calendar – our annual Senior Phase Celebration of Learning, when we gathered together to recognise and celebrate the amazing achievements of our young people over the past year.
Our grateful thanks to everyone involved in making the evening such a resounding success: Mr Grant Connor- recipient of the Freedom of Kelso High School Award – for presenting the awards to our worthy winners; to our fantastic Head Team who ensured the evening ran smoothly; to Emma Page for her stunning musical rendition; to Mrs Ashley Wilson in our School Office who – as always – went above and beyond in organising the evening; to all families and friends of KHS who came along to celebrate the achievements of our young people. A huge thank you and well done to all our award winners themselves for their commitment and hard work over last session. We have such a lot to be proud of here at KHS. Please enjoy some photographs from the evening. To view even more photos, please visit our KHS Facebook page. #pridekhs

Congratulations to our Head Team for 2023-2024
Congratulations to our Head Team of 2023-2024 who were presented with their Badges of Office last night by 2022-2023 Head team member, Dylan Mackenzie. On their first ‘official’ whole school event, our team of Abi, Elsa, Will and Callum did us proud with their seamless presentations and smooth running of the event. Thank you! #pridekhs

Freedom of Kelso High School Award 2023
It is our great pleasure to announce that this year’s worthy recipient of the Freedom of Kelso High School Award is Grant Connor. Grant was a pupil here at KHS from 2008-2014 and during his time with us developed a passion for Geography and Environmental Science.
A degree from SRUC (Scotland’s Rural College) in Edinburgh led to Grant gaining a position with a major Perthshire potato grower. Grant is now employed by Albanwise Farming Ltd – currently one of the ten largest agribusinesses in the UK with a turnover of £9.77 million in 2022 – whose farms stretch across 12,000 hectares in both Yorkshire and Norfolk. Specialising in seed potatoes Albanwise Farming Ltd harvests around 12,000 tons every year which accounts for 2% of the UK’s total production. As a Seed Potato Manager, Grant is in charge of a 10,000 acre farm in North Yorkshire.
It was our absolute pleasure to welcome Grant and his family back to KHS yesterday evening and we would like to thank Grant for presenting the S4-S6 Celebration of Learning Awards and for his thoughtful speech where he highlighted to our 2022-2023 Award winners that finding what they are passionate about is key to achieving success. #pridekhs

Well done Dylan
Huge congratulations to Dylan Mackenzie who as Dux of Kelso High School for 2023 was awarded the Bowmont Medal donated by His Grace The Duke of Roxburghe at last night’s Celebration of Learning Evening. All at Kelso High School would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Dylan on his outstanding academic achievements and wish him all the very best as he embarks on the next stage of his studies at Strathclyde University. We look forward to hearing how he gets on. #pridekhs

Well done Leona
We would also like to take this opportunity to offer our heartiest congratulations to Leona Brown, who as Kelso High School Proxime Accessit for 2023 was awarded the Scott Salver given in memory of Lady Isobel Scott at last night’s Celebration of Learning ceremony. We would like to say a huge well done to Leona on this magnificent achievement and wish her all the very best as she starts her Archaeological Studies at the University of Edinburgh next week. Well done Leona from all at KHS. #pridekhs

Well done S2 Options
Prepare to be amazed! We are so proud of these absolutely brilliant monoprints that our S2 Art Options class completed this week. All the class worked really hard and as you can see the quality of the pieces they have produced is stunning. Well done to all involved and a huge thank you to our fantastic Art Department for supporting our young people to achieve of their very best. Well done to our KHS S2 Stone Carvers
What a fantastic afternoon! Yesterday afternoon our talented S2 Stone Carvers gathered to unveil their amazing creations which they have gifted to the residents of Kerfield Court. Everything about this intergenerational project has absolutely blown us away – the talent and dedication of our young people, the above and beyond commitment of Louise and Michelle and the friendships our young people have formed with the staff and residents of Kerfield Court.
To see the confidence with which our young people described their part in the project, welcomed guests to yesterday’s ceremony and to witness the polite and respectful way they interacted with all residents and guests at yesterday’s event made us a very proud school.
A huge thank you to the wonderful residents at Kerfield Court for making us so welcome (and for the delicious shortbread). Our grateful appreciation to everyone who supported our #intergenerational project: Abbey Row Community Centre; Thomas Maconochie Trust; Cheviot Neighbourhood Support Fund; SB Community Learning; and to Natasha Smith for great teaching and guidance. For even more photographs of this amazing event, please visit our KHS Facebook page.

Introduction to Cambridge University
This week a group of our S5 students attended a very informative session about the fabulous opportunities on offer at Cambridge University for Scottish applicants. They were talked through the application process, the generous financial support available and assisted to demystify the contents of Oxbridge interviews. #aimhigh #aspire #pridekhs

Higher Business Studies
In our Social Subjects Faculty this week, the Higher Business Management class have been actively learning by using Lego to create tall business structures and discussing the effect of delayering. Learners could visually see the impact of changing structures and this led to further discussion around how this changes business dynamics. Pupils were also set a challenge of who could build the tallest structure in ten minutes. As you can see from the pictures, there was some tough competition amongst the class! Well done to all involved and thank you to Mrs Fisher for the photos! #pridekhs

Thank You! From Princes Trust Group.

Free School Meals and Clothing Grant

We urge all families who are entitled to do so to register for free school meals as this opens up other supports that you may be entitled to and brings additional funding into the school.
KHS Parent Council
Welcome back everyone! How are we in week 3 already? It is great to see everyone, old and new, settling into KHS so well. A huge congratulations too to everyone who did SQA exams/qualifications last year. We hope you are really proud of yourselves – you should be!
KHS Parent Council is the grouping of parents and carers who want to know what is going on in the school, and have a say in how things are going. We also fund many extra-curricular things that go on in the school. We have monthly meetings (a mixture of zoom and in person) and we PROMISE not to ask you to do any more than turn up to the meetings! We keep fundraising to a minimum – mostly this is done through our lottery.
We would love to have some more folk involved, bringing new ideas, thoughts and experiences. The more people we have the more people’s views we can represent!
We are having a very brief (half an hour) meeting on zoom next week (Thursday 14th Sept at 7.30pm) just to welcome new faces, introduce ourselves and get an idea of what parents and carers would like us to focus on this school year. It will be a very informal chat to find out what is important to you and your young people so we can set priorities for the year.
Our next meeting after that will in person in the school on Monday 25th September at 7pm. This will include our AGM (because we have to have one) but again we will prioritise the issues that matter to you. At the moment we’d like to talk about S1’s and settling in, Attendance, Behaviour, Mobile phones and Parental involvement but if you think something else is more important do let us know!
So please:
- Come along to our brief meeting next Thursday 14th September at 7.30pm via Zoom
https://us06web.zoom.us/j/86810864733?pwd=WS9ERzlOVDF6bythRnFKeG1ZcDJnZz09
Meeting ID: 868 1086 4733
Passcode: 116206
- Come along to our meeting on Monday 25th September at 7.00pm at KHS
- And most importantly – sign up for the lottery (forms attached). This is how we do most of our fundraising! It takes very little effort and you might win up to £1000!!!
If you are unable to attend but have questions or queries please send them by email to pckelsohighschool@scottishborders.npfs.org.uk. Questions can be asked anonymously if you would prefer.
