Welcome Back

On Wednesday, it was great to catch up with our young people in S2 – S6 after a long summer and especially exciting to meet out new S1 learners.  I would like to extend a warm welcome to our new parents/carers who have joined the Kelso High community this year.  A reminder that if parents/carers do have any questions about their young person the initial point of contact is their Pastoral teacher.  They will do their very best to answer questions or seek out answers for you.  Thank you to everyone for wearing the KHS school uniform, pupils looked very smart.  Just a reminder that school shoes should be black.

We welcomed a number of new teachers to the school this year:

Ms Wootton (Art)

Miss Nisbet (Biology)

Mrs Lawson (Home Economics)

Miss MacDougall (Home Economics)

Dr Koita (Modern Studies)

Mr Stobie (PE)

Mr Maybury (Physics)

Mr Smith (CLD Youth Worker)

In-service Day Training

This year our staff had two days prior to the young people retuning on Wednesday.  During these days we are able to begin our initial analysis of SQA results, provide updates around school policies and school improvement planning for the session ahead.  As staff we also began our INSPIRE learning training, we were introduced to a number of exciting opportunities we will have with our new iPads to enhance the learning experience for all.  The plans are still on schedule for every young person to be issued with their own iPads by approx. the end of September.

S3 Parents’ Information Evening

There is a S3 Parent Information Session on Thursday 29th August from 6.30pm – 7.15pm.  Invite letter attached below.

S1 Lunch

Reminder that our young people within S1 should be remaining within school grounds during lunchtime.

Drop off / Pick Up

A reminder that all parents are asked to use the relevant areas on the main road outside the school to drop off or pick up their child.  There is no facility within the school grounds and therefore no cars should be waiting here.

Annual Update Forms

This week within the school bags there should be a brown envelope containing a data sheet that is personal to your child.  Please can we ask that you search the bag to retrieve this item, if not already done so.  It is very important that we hold the most up to date information and so the relevant paperwork requires to be checked, signed and returned to school via your son/daughter’s Register Teacher.

Absence from school

A reminder to all parents that if your son/daughter is absent from school then please can you contact the school office to inform us and state the reason asap.  It is important that we keep all of our young people safe, that is why we send out a groupcall message.  Please contact the office by phone, email or if it is a planned absence a letter is also acceptable.

School Photos

S1, S4 and S6 will be getting school photographs taken on Thursday 29th August.  Details of time slots will be in the daily bulletin next week, please ask your youngster to watch out for this.

Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA)

It’s time to apply for EMA.  Are you staying on at school and will be 16 before 29th February 2020?  If so you may be eligible for EMA payments of £30 per week.  Please collect an EMA Form from the School Office. See flyer below for information.

NPA Beekeeping Results Day in the Apiary

Kelso High School students are as proud as punch with their brand new L5 SQA beekeeping certificates. The first ever to be awarded in Scotland. They met at one of the student’s homes, where some of our learners are now keeping bees. It was so rewarding to hear them discussing the well-being of their new colony. A beautiful thing is that as more schools get involved and develop their own apiaries, there is so much more to look forward to. There are now more than 20 high schools across Scotland in different stages of development – KHS is excited and proud to be working together with these talented teachers and students. The support of Borders Beekeepers Association, The Thomas Maconochie Fund and Roxburghe Estates have been essential for the development of our school bee club - thanks to everyone involved. Soon the S2 bee club will continue to meet, and students will have the opportunity to find out more about this new qualification. Also a new bee club will be set up especially for our S1 learners.

Keep Kelso / KHS Tidy!

Pupils are reminded to respect both their school and their community and ensure that they use rubbish bins provided around school and the town to dispose of any litter.  If anyone has any suggestions on how we can promote this to stop littering please contact KHS at [email protected].
