Weekly Update 15/02/19

February Holiday

KHS will be closed for holidays on Monday 18th February until Wednesday 20th February.  Pupils return on Thursday 21st February.  We hope everyone enjoys the well earned break.

#BigParentsEve

Developing the Young Workforce Borders are hosting the #BigParentsEve with partners to promote live job opportunities in the Scottish Borders to parents, carers and young people who are the future workforce. We are very aware that parents and carers are the biggest influencers on a young person’s career choice and the aim of the event is to inspire and inform people of all the opportunities available locally.

Scotland's Biggest Parents' Evening is a serious of events across Scotland developed in partnership, it will see all 21 DYW regional groups across Scotland highlight the value of apprenticeships, work based learning and local job opportunities on Wednesday 6th March.

There will be guest speakers to inform parents, carers and young people of the routes available within the apprenticeship family and how these link in with the Scottish Qualification Frameworks.  The event will take place at Jobcentre Plus, New Reiver House, Galashiels, TD1 1TD on Wednesday 6th March from 5pm-7pm.

Please see attached poster below regarding this event.  You can register your interest by signing up to the event through Eventbrite - https://bigparentseve.eventbrite.co.uk

Schools Academy Borders College

Please note that Borders College Schools Academy courses will run up until Thursday 29th March.  As there are not many teaching weeks left it is very important that pupils attend regularly if they are to achieve their qualification.

Due to the February holiday there are no college classes on Tuesday 19th February.

Love & Bananas – An elephant story

On Wednesday 27th February all of S3 will be watching a screening of the film ‘Love & Bananas – an elephant story’.  We are very fortunate that the world renowned conservationist Lek Chailert is recording a personal message of thanks for the students and will give a bit more background information. This event will highlight the plight of the Asian elephant and will give students the opportunity to look at themes of animal welfare, global citizenship and activism. The afternoon screening will be followed by a public screening at night. We are also holding a raffle with fantastic prizes to help support the organisations involved.   Poster attached below.

Next Parent Council Meeting

A short Parent Council meeting will be held on Wednesday 27th February from 6.00pm just before the Love & Bananas screening.  All welcome!!

Parent Involvement & Engagement

We are currently looking at increasing family involvement and engagement with learning, as research suggests that engaged families result in better, more successful outcomes for young people. In order to help us improve this at KHS, we would like your help and to see what parents and carers’ views are on this matter. Please take our quick survey by following the link below.
